OF THE INSTITUTE For quite a while we have felt the need for a closer, moreregular contact with the Instituted members and friends than that afforded by the mailings of historical publications and the annual report. The A*I*H*P* NOTES will try to meet this need. It has been suggested occasionally that the A*I#HtPê establish a historical journal« There is distinguished precedent for that in the quarterly Revue d'Histoire de la Pharmacie (formerly Bulletin), now beginning Volume 43 (900 francs including membership, Socie'té (^Histoire de la Pharmacie, c/o M. Lemoine, Treasurer, 71, rue de Temple, Paris 3, France), and more recently in the quarterly Boletín de la Sociedad Española de Historia de la Farmacia, now beginnin; g Volume 6 (25 pesetas, Sociadad Espafíoia de Historia de la Farmacia, Canipamor 18, Madrid, Spain). Quite apart from the financial problem an American counterpart would imply, the Institute officers have been reluctant to consider establishing still another pharmaceutical journal for one principal reason: If studies of the pharmaceutical development are worth doing, they should be worthy of the wider audience offered by national journals of pharmacy and related, fields* (This assumes of course that these publication channels remain reasonably open to writers on historical and social topics«,) As our members know, the Institute publishes selected studies of general interest that are too comprehensive for the journals, plus shorter studies, which first appear in specialized periodicals, that its particular audience welcomes as separates for ready reference«, This follows more closely the pattern of the German Gesellschaft für Geschichte der Pharmazie'1 than it does that of the French and' Spanish* Beginning modestly, the A* Io Ha P. NOTES periodically will to members some of the information (other than historical essays) bring that would be found in a journal: announcements, book notes, progress reports on Institute activities, personal notes and the like, which have historical interest* Each of these newsletters will be sent to all American schools of pharmacy, as an A*I*H» P. service to teachers of the history of pharmacy« This content downloaded from 142.58.129.109 on Sun, 18 Oct 2015 23:00:38 UTC All use subject to JSTOR Terms and Conditions 2.
